When is 370 miles of fence enough to block a 2000 mile border?

Charles Krauthammer asked this last night and it reveals all the problems with illegal immigration.  The people who really care about it want the border closed.  For the rest of the people a band aid will be enough.  For me we have to close the border and then we can talk about the rest.  I will support an immigration bill when the fence is all 2000 miles long.

Mark, I agree. Fred Thompson has a useful column on the bill (linked at RCP today), in which he makes precisely your point. My ideal solution: first, seal the border; only after that, grant permanent residency to those already here (who are decent hardworking folk) and then increase to a reasonable amount legal immigration.
