Reagan, Bush, and McCain

posted Tuesday, 12 February 2008

It is clear that many conservatives are mad about the choice of McCain as the Republican standard bearer.  My niece even called McCain a RINO (Republican in name only.)  Yet, we must understand that politicians in power often have to make the best of bad choices and they have a tough time sticking to conservative principles in the face of complex choices.  This was true of Reagan.  Reagan gave us an amnesty based immigration plan that failed.  Reagan gave us large fiscal deficits that have turned into a huge national debt.  Finally, Reagan authorized selling arms to Iran to free hostages.

Bush oversaw a huge increase in the national debt and never vetoed a spending bill during the first 6 years of his presidency.  Bush signed the bad McCain-Feingold bill.  Bush signed the No Child Left Behind bill.

McCain is right on the war on terror and on spending.  I don’t understand how a conservative could vote for Reagan and Bush and now oppose McCain.
