McCain wins South Carolina!

Last time McCain lost in South Carolina and it was the beginning of the end.  This time it is different and with McCain winning we must say he is the front runner but that does not mean much because every time we have a front runner they tend to lose next time.  Yet, winning in the South and the North matters.  On to Florida!

This certainly is an interesting season. I am heartened by McCain's win in my home state of SC, where Huckabee had a natural advantage. I agree with the pundits that if Huckabee can't win in SC, it's hard to see where he can win. I think that he will begin to fade and that we are now in essentially a three-man race. If Giuliani doesn't do exceptionally weel in FL, I don't know whether he will be viable. Still, if Huckabee and McCain split the North- and Central-FL conservative vote, Giuliani might well win by carrying South FL by himself.

By the way, Bill Kristol had a very nice piece in the Standard today (linked at RCP) about how conservative commentators (read: Rush) need to stop beating up on reasonable and viable Republican candidates (read: McCain). I sometimes wonder if, after all his talk about how he is the conservative movement and how his endorsement would gain a candidate the nomination, Rush isn't frustrated that his clear anti-Mccainism doesn't seem to have the clout that he has been assuring us he has. That might explain in part why it seems so personal with him (to quote King Claudius).
