Energy independence and the election

posted Saturday, 12 January 2008
I have blogged before about the need for energy independence.  True energy independence is going to be a combination of new drilling for oil, more coal, new nuclear, better solar, wind, water power and energy conservation.  There is no answer that will work if we don't do all or most of the list.  We need a solution from the center that accepts that both the left and right cannot fix this by themselves.  We will eventually have to replace oil and we need much more research on the replacement.  My friend Rich said he would vote for a candidate from either party who would back a real energy independence push for energy independence in 15 years.  I think we could become free in 10 years but we must start.  This is one of the issues that I wish we could push to the front of the political year.

I agree. Energy independence is important. I heard about a car they've made in Australia and France that runs on compressed air. It can only go up to 60mph and every 140 miles it has to be refilled. But compressed air is cheap. Anyway, I think that getting a car like that into our major cities would be a big push for energy independence. These hybrid and electric cars are not as good because their batteries wear out after 6 or 8 years and the cost of a new battery is about the cost of a new car. As for ethanol, I don't think there's enough land in the U.S. for us to grow the corn required for us to subsist solely on that. It's clear to me that we need better alternatives and we need to drill more of the oil on our own land or on our continental shelf.
