Confused about Obama

posted Monday, 7 January 2008
I have read several articles on realclearpolitics.com this morning that think Obama is a real candidate who would be hard to beat in a general election!  This confuses me because I do not see one Southern state that Obama can win.  In a fifty state analysis I think Obama is a clear loser.  Am I missing something?  In a general election I could see Clinton win Arkansas and maybe Florida which would give her the Presidency but I don't see Obama winning either state.  What do the other's see that I am missing?

I think they're basing their assumptions on two things: 1) Obama won the Iowa caucuses and Iowa is a mostly white state. 2) Everyone assumes that a Democrat is going to win the election this year just because.

I think a lot of people like Obama because he sounds good when he talks. I don't think they're analyzing past that. Which is part of the reason the Dems always end up with nominees like John Kerry. They always vote for the most out there, leftist person running and think that's what the rest of the country wants.

I'd like to expand on Esther's thought that Obama sounds good when he talks. In fact, he sounds very "genuine," which may be more valuable right now than gold. From many people's perspectives, the last three presidents--now spanning 20 years--can be summarized in the following three phrases: "No new taxes," "I did not have sex with that woman," and "Axis of evil." While various people have various opinions on these three presidents, there is a widespread feeling that it's been a while since we've had a president who was both competent and not lying through his teeth. I think the way Obama talks capitalizes on that feeling, and it that may mean more than anything anyone else says or does during the campaign. His victory in Iowa means that real "middle" Americans are actually buying it.

But to echo Esther once again--yeah, he's probably the Second Coming of Jimmy Carter.

Craig, I don't understand why using the phrase "Axis of evil" characterizes the President as a liar. --Stephen
