I hate to say it, but that's pretty much par for the course with laptops.
I've had bad enough luck that I'm never going back. However, I have had
good experiences with Dell desktops, so (unless your laptop was a Dell) you
might try them.
One of my college roommates had a Toshiba laptop. Come to think of it she
still has it which means it would be about 5 years old and still going
strong. That's my recommendation. The support for if it was broken was
good too, I remember.
