Did President Bush destroy the Republican Party?

posted Friday, 25 January 2008

Peggy Noonan is one of my favorite writers.  She writes today

George W. Bush destroyed the Republican Party, by which I mean he sundered it, broke its constituent pieces apart and set them against each other. He did this on spending, the size of government, war, the ability to prosecute war, immigration and other issues.

I like Noonan but like a lot of people in New York she goes to far in Bush derangement.  The President has allowed way to much spending and is wrong on many things but that he destroyed the party is a bit much.

I have always felt Bush's greatest crime against Conservatives and Republicans is that we cannot worship him. Remember the enthusiasm we poured into his campaign back in 2000? The feelings of injustice when Al Gore held our country hostage for a few weeks? The heroism we saw in him right after 9-11? But the fact is, he was never super-Conservative and we knew it. Our feelings just kinda interfered with that notion.

I agree with Craig. Bush is not the great Satan of the Republican Party. He's just a moderate Republican and we expected him to be way more conservative. The funny thing is, I remember thinking "he's not that conservative" before the primaries in 2000.

I think a lot of people go too far with the Bush bashing. The fact is, for Bush to be what people incriminate him as he would practically need to be God, or Superman. People accuse him of singlehandedly destroying the country (on purpose, because Bush hates us, they usually add) and at the same time of being an incompetent and an idiot. I am left wonder what exactly is he: a mastermind or a monkey? Not that I like Bush much, but I try to be consistent in my criticisms.

Oh, and I also think Peggy Noonan is an excellent writer.
