Bhutto is dead and Islam is the question?

posted Thursday, 27 December 2007

Benazir Bhutto has been killed and that is a shame.  No politician should be killed but all religions have had assassins. Modern Islam has its radicals that see only violence.  Outsiders cannot solve the problem of the radicals--only Muslims who want a real change. Without an internal battle Islam will only become more violent.  My hope is that the West can stay out of the way as the moderates and radicals battle for the heart and sole of Islam but sadly we may get pulled into the problem because we still need oil so we will stay active in the Middle East.

Surely it was radical Muslims? As Hitch says in Slate today, it's difficult to see how this dreadful assassination furthers Musharraf's career in the long run. Pakistan must be a complicated, fascinating, beautiful, and terrifying place.

That's an excellent point. Internal pressures work far better than external. South Africa is a good example of that. I doubt Apartheid would have ended without the internal pressures that occurred. When it was all said and done the UN sanctions didn't really do any good.
