Al Gore is wrong but part of what he wants is possible

posted Sunday, 20 July 2008
Gore wants us to be off oil in 10 years which is wrong.  But he is right that part of it is wind, solar, water but the other part is public transportation, nuclear, drilling.  In other words, we can help the environment and become energy independent in 10 years if we do it all.  There is no way we can get energy independent just on solar, wind, and water.  So, if Gore really wants to help the environment he should work on a grand compromise but he would rather be a star on the left than really getting anything done.  The fact that Gore really does not want to get anything done should be apparent since as Vice-President he never got anything done on the environment and when he ran for President he almost never mention the environment.  In Chicago we called people like that a faker.

Dear Politicalman, you are right to remind of that last point. How genuine can a man's passion be if, when as a holder of high office he had the opportunity to actually do something about his passion and did nothing? I suspect that the did nothing because he would have had to pay a large political price for taking unpopular positions. Now that he is out of office, he makes no sacrifice by taking a position that is presently very fashionable. One might contrast this mode with a certain candidate for President, who actually takes clear positions (say on the War or on immigration) even if sometimes they are deeply unpopular with his constituency and damage him politically. --Stephen
