Dear Politicalman,
you are right to remind of that last point. How genuine can a man's passion
be if, when as a holder of high office he had the opportunity to actually
do something about his passion and did nothing? I suspect that the did
nothing because he would have had to pay a large political price for taking
unpopular positions. Now that he is out of office, he makes no sacrifice by
taking a position that is presently very fashionable. One might contrast
this mode with a certain candidate for President, who actually takes clear
positions (say on the War or on immigration) even if sometimes they are
deeply unpopular with his constituency and damage him politically.
